I also wonder whether you have considered merging the command line and idle somehow? E.g. in pymol, any command that is not recognized as a pymol command is interpreted as python code (or one can explicity flag python code with a python/python end block).

This would be useful in Chimera interactively, but would also be great for making com files where chimera scripting code and python code are intermingled (rather than needing to create a separate py file for a trivial function).
